PSV Social Pods
Is your child interested in meeting other children
in their grade but in other Los Angeles private schools?
Are you interested in trying to make sure our children continue to "see" themselves, if even only virtually sometimes?
PSV is creating grade level social pods for families who attend Los Angeles private schools that sponsor PSV. These pods will be parent led and grouped by grades and will meet at least once a month (if not more, depending on the planned activity).
We are shooting to start these pods in January 2022 and will spend the next few months gaging participant interest, securing parent volunteers to help manage these pods, and planning for the January start. Depending on the state of our city’s health and the latest health recommendations, these pods may be comprised of small clusters and activities will be a mix of virtual and in-person activities. Students under age 12 who are most likely not vaccinated yet will be in virtual pods — not in person — for the moment). Because we may have many pods per grade level, depending on the number of participants that sign up per grade level, we will need an adequate amount of parent volunteers willing to sign up to serve as parent pod leaders (described in the participation form below).
We hope these pods will continue to give our children opportunities to connect while also building cultural pride and knowledge, and the ability to socialize in person, safely.
To start, we will prioritize creating pods based on responses to the below social pod participation forms submitted (whichever grade levels sign up with the adequate parent volunteers first, will form first) and again, we envision the program including the following, at least initially—
Pods will be created per grade level, in groups of at least 10 students, but no more than 15, to start. If we secure more sign-ups we will create more pod clusters for that grade level as long as we have enough parent volunteers signed up to lead the clusters. For a group of 10, we need at least 3 parent volunteers to sign up and for a pod of 15, we need 4. Because we are capping the pod size, the pods will be single gender for now unless two single-gender pods aren’t full. Then they will be merged and participants will be notified in advance. Eventually, pods will be mixed gender and not capped in size — these are just parameters created because of COVID restrictions and associated limitations.
Parent Social Pod Leaders will work closely with PSV to create a calendar of planned activities that are low to no-cost. This could include:
Classes (pods facilitate a mix of virtual and/or in-person, age-appropriate classes from cooking and etiquette to Black history and college readiness)
For any classes taken as a pod, students will meet before the class begins, have a mandatory connecting, social task prior to each class start as well as a mandatory closing regrouping activity.
Additional class ideas: Talent Show/Games, Cooking for the Culture, Racial Literacy Skill Building, Learning about the Diaspora, Black History from a Decolonized Perspective class, Private Servers for Online Gaming, Career Discussions, etc.
Community Service Projects: LA Family Housing’s “Welcome Home Basket” Donation Drive, Hashtag Lunchbag Service Project, etc.
In-Person Activities: Roller Skating, K-1 Racing Car Driving, Putt-Putt Golf, etc (depending on costs)
Beyond Breathe: Anxiety and depression can be 6 times as high for students in high achieving schools. Add on the load of being Black in private school and it’s no wonder that suicide and self harm among Black teens is on the rise when compared to their white peers. We need to give our children more tools to deal with mental health and normalize its importance — this once-a-week, 3-week session is a great start; facilitated by UCLA Sky Happiness Program
